We’ll suggest properties to match your preferred budget, be it low-cost, mid-range or high-end luxury that you’re looking for. We can also mix it up so you’ll experience a range of standards and experiences along your road trip.
All of our road trips can be tailored to meet your requirements. Do you have more or less than 14 days for your road trip? No problem, we can bolt on extra nights to allow more time to explore or shorten the number of destinations as required.
After a short flight from the UK, you’ll settle into your chosen Halifax hotel before enjoying dinner on the waterfront or at your hotel.
Halifax is dominated by a citadel which sits above the city; this former fort is a National Historic Site of Canada and a must-do for visitors. Next, we recommend you work your way down to the waterfront boardwalk via points of interest like the Halifax Public Gardens, Halifax Public Library and the Canadian Museum of Immigration. Finish the day with a cruise on the water or a meal on the boardwalk.
It’s time to get behind the wheel and set out on a calming road trip around coastal Nova Scotia. The amount of coastal driving on this particular holiday is astounding, and the first leg of this route along the eastern shore is a great place to start.
Technically an island, Cape Breton is linked to the rest of Nova Scotia by the Canso Causeway. Once you’ve crossed the bridge, you’ll head up the northern side of the UNESCO-protected Bras d’Or Lake before joining the world-famous Cabot Trail route in the northeastern tip of Nova Scotia.
Scenic highlights in this area include Ingonish Beach, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and Cape Smokey Provincial Park. If you’re a history lover, then consider heading south to the Fortress of Louisbourg Historic Site or the Cape Breton Miners’ Museum, which is located in Glace Bay.
The Cabot Trail is considered one of the best drives in North America. Today, you’ll spend the whole day completing this awesome loop past Cape Breton Highlands National Park and mile upon mile of epic coastal scenery. Once you’ve completed the drive and maybe a hike or two, you’ll finish off the day with a well-deserved beer or glass of wine on the shores of Bras d’Or Lake.
It’s time to swap one pretty landscape for another slightly different but equally pleasing one. Firstly, you’ll head west to Pictou, your Road Trip Pack will advise you about the area’s highlights you can consider stopping at along the way. From Pictou, Nova Scotia, you’ll board a ferry and take a short ferry ride over to rural Prince Edward Island. Once you’re back on dry land, we recommend you swing by Point Prim Lighthouse on your way to your next stop… adorable Charlottetown.
If you consider yourself a bit of a bookworm, then you’re probably familiar with the Anne of Green Gables series of books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The writer was a resident of a small town called Cavendish, which lies 20 miles northwest of Charlottetown. Fans flock from around the world to see the area the books were based on and to walk in the footsteps of the book’s lead character – Anne Shirley. If this doesn’t appeal, then you can simply enjoy the island’s scenery or explore Charlottetown’s charming streets and shops.
Prince Edward Island National Park is a delightful coastal area north of Charlottetown. Walk the boardwalk in Greenwich, and then relax on one of the quiet beaches. In the evening, you can dine at one of the excellent restaurants found on or close to Queen Street. After dinner, we highly recommend you get into the “Anne of Green Gables ” spirit and enjoy a performance of the Broadway quality musical, which operates to critical acclaim each summer.
Today, you’ll cross the 13km long Confederation Bridge and enter your third province on this road trip – New Brunswick. The Bay of Fundy awaits, with its record-breaking tidal activity and crazy “flower pot” formations. Our trip is designed to ensure you’ll witness both high and low tide, including the opportunity to walk on the ocean floor while the tide is out. Hopewell Rocks is simply a must-see stop as you make your way to charming Alma on the north side of the Bay.
A full day to ensure you can walk on the ocean floor during low tide in the Bay of Fundy. Afterwards, we recommend you either go out on the water or enjoy a hike within neighbouring Fundy National Park.
Time to return to Nova Scotia, you’ll spend the morning driving to the south side of the Bay of Fundy. During the afternoon, you can opt to ride a tidal bore along the Shubenacadie River, see more Bay of Fundy “flower pot” formations in Burntcoat Head Park, step back in time at the UNESCO world heritage site of Grand Pre and enjoy a wine tasting experience in Wolfville.
Spend a leisurely morning in delightful Wolfville and neighbouring Grand Pre, before taking the short drive to history-laden Annapolis Royal to the west. Today is a relaxing day after a busy day 12, so find yourself a nice chair somewhere to finish off your holiday reading book, catch up on your holiday diary writing, or post those all-important social media updates.
At The American Road Trip Company, we like to finish our itineraries with a bang. Kejimkujik National Park, the Unesco-protected town of Lunenburg and nearby Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse will leave a lasting impression, and the numerous photo opportunities will soon wipe out any remaining memory on your camera or phone.
