1. Boston, Massachusetts

The birthplace of the American Revolution. Boston played a crucial role in the American Revolution, being the site of key events such as the Boston Tea Party, and continues to embody a rich cultural and historical legacy, which you can visit at iconic landmarks including the Freedom Trail.

Where is Boston, MA? A 4-hour drive from NYC and just over an hour from Providence, Rhode Island,  Boston fits nicely into our East Coast Road Trips

What to do in Boston, Massachusetts? Firstly, every local will tell you that the Freedom Trail is a must! Journey through American history on a 2.5-mile road which takes you through Boston Common along 16 significant sights. With walking tours available, this route is best taken with a guide who can answer any question as you stroll but can, of course, be explored without.

Acorn Street is a pretty little cobbled street which must be seen if passing. Afterwards, you could visit one of the country’s top universities. Harvard, in nearby Cambridge,  offers tours of the campus, which is guided by students, and best of all- it’s completely free!

Beer lovers will enjoy the Samuel Adams Brewery, which too is free of charge.

Did you know…  Boston is named after a town in England! When voyagers settled there in the early days, the Englishmen decided to keep the name of their home town.

What to eat in Boston, MA? Of course, your Road Trip to Boston wouldn’t be complete without some seafood. So, a Lobster Roll should be top of your list! Take it all in before finishing it all off with a tasty Boston cream pie!

2. Plymouth, Massachusetts

When the pilgrims got lost in their search for New York they stumbled across this patch of land, naming it after the port they had departed from on other side of the pond. The remains of their adventures are well preserved for the public to experience, giving justice to the title of being America’s Hometown. Walk in the footsteps of the Native Americans and the Pilgrims, and witness a stunning replica of the Mayflower that carried them.

Pilgrims first settled here in 1620, so Plymouth, Massachusetts, is fondly named America’s home town. The Falmouth Plymouth Rock marks where settlers are thought to have first stepped ashore.

Where is Plymouth, Massachusetts? Plymouth is a coastal town in Massachusetts, just south of Boston. Plymouth is less than an hour’s drive from Boston, 2 hours drive to Martha’s Vineyard, including a ferry, and just over four hours drive to New York City.

What to do in Plymouth, Massachusetts? Full of fascinating history, The Plimoth Patuxet Museums, formerly known as the Plimouth Plantation is a great place to start your visit to Plymouth. This living history museum shows just how it all began. Visit the Mayflower II, a full-size reproduction of the original ship that brought the pilgrims to Massachusetts.

3. Newport, Rhode Island

The city by the sea is a perfect summer getaway filled with classic Colonial architecture and the salty smell of the ocean on the wind. Rhode Island is one of the many historic cities in New England

Where is Newport, Rhode Island? Rhode Island is on the East Coast, in New England.
Rhode Island is not an island at all, but it is by the sea and has beautiful white sandy beaches. It is the smallest state in the USA but is full of big fun!

What to do in Newport, Rhode Island? Newport is one of our favourite destinations in Rhode Island. It is one of the top sailing destinations in the world, and the boats here are phenomenal. There will be ample opportunity for you to get out on the water. Visit the impressive Newport Mansions. Breakers Mansion, Rose Cliff and the Marble House are among our favourites!

The city’s historic district, including The Breakers and other opulent mansions, stands as a testament to Newport’s social and economic prominence during pivotal periods in American history.
