The Hoover Dam marks the divide between Nevada and Arizona, forming Lake Mead to the North, which is one of the largest manmade reservoirs in the world. The Dam was built to control the flow of the mighty Colorado River, whilst providing electricity for an expanding nation. Today it’s more prominent for providing the public with the opportunity to sail and partake in other water activities in safe circumstances, under the preserve of the National Park Service.

Where is the Hoover Dam?
You will find this giant structure spanning over 1,244 feet in the Black Canyon on the Arizona – Nevada border. Just 35 miles outside of Las Vegas, a stop here is ideal for a stop en-route to The Grand Canyon. The Dam was built to prevent flooding in the area, helping with irrigation through the dry desert and to generate hydro-electricity.
What to do near The Hoover Dam?
Walk over the Mike o’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge and get an up-close view the incredible concrete structure. Afterwards, you can head into Boulder City for a lunch stop or drive along North Shore Road which winds around the lake.
