Tell us about your last road trip adventure…

My last adventure was to Boston where we hired a car to visit the surrounding areas of Plymouth, Cape Cod, Salem in Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island. The area is full of history and is fabulous to visit at most times of the year. Whilst we were there the whole city was decorated in the run up for the winter festivities and we were lucky to celebrate Thanksgiving in the city, which was such a lovely experience. I can’t wait to plan my next trip to New England as I would love to visit the quaint towns on Cape Cod and venture to Nantucket during the summer months.

Favourite place visited on a road trip?

Nashville has to be one of my favourite places I have visited (amongst many others!). The music scene is incredible, the bars and restaurants along Broadway are all filled with country, blues and rock music day and night. A close second is the Grand Canyon – it truly takes your breath away.

Favourite road trip?

Route 66 has to be my ultimate favourite as it was my first ever trip. I had serious holiday blues when I got home! The trip gives you a flavour of so many states, the scenery was spectacular and the food was to die for. We also met so many friendly local people along our way which made it an unforgettable trip.

Favourite excursion?

Any guided tour as I love to learn about the history, architecture and culture of where I am visiting. The ‘Prohibition Tour’ in Chicago was one of my most memorable. We visited several speakeasies across the city and saw the secret doors, rooms and gunshot marks on the bars and walls! We even got to sip a cocktail in what was Al Capone’s bar.

Favourite hotel?

It’s a toss up between two hotels! The Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico on the Old Route 66. I loved this motel as it made you feel like you had travelled back in time with its traditional rooms and bright neon sign. My other favourite would have to be Devereaux Shields House in Natchez, Mississippi. The real southern hospitality from the owners on our arrival was brilliant and the house itself is beautiful.

Most memorable drive?

Winding our way through Yosemite and then Death Valley, the changes in scenery are unbelievable.

Favourite meal to eat whilst in America?

Biscuits and gravy at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant and Country Store (a fab American chain restaurant). It sounds bizarre to us Brits but the warm savoury scones and sausage gravy are real comfort food!

Why do you love America so much?

Each state, city or town is so different. You can go from snorkelling off the coast of Florida to hiking in Yosemite to watching a blues band play in Memphis to standing at the top of the Empire State Building…the list goes on! Each place has something completely unique to offer!
