Day 1

Arrive in San Francisco

Arrive in California, and take a taxi from the airport to find your hotel in the cosmopolitan city of San Francisco. Enjoy an evening meal in one of the city's excellent restaurants before settling in for the night, so you are ready and refreshed for two full days exploring in this wonderful city on the bay.

Explore the city

Once the fog lifts, one of America’s favourite cities will be revealed. Ride a cable car, climb the streets and get into the vibe that only this city can offer. Full of Victorian charm, famous movie locations and wealthy tech companies, San Francisco has it all.

Day 3

A third day in the Golden Gate City

A second full day to explore San Fran’s must-see places which will be listed in your personalised Road Trip Pack. Places like the Coit Tower, Lombard Street, the Painted Ladies, Union Square and Alcatraz are just a few of the ones that warrant a visit. Whilst you’re in San Francisco you simply must experience some of the best Chinese food in the world, thanks to the large Chinese community that call this city home.

Day 4

Whale watching in Monterey

Before leaving town, try to take in the Golden Gate Park, bigger and more diverse than New York’s Central Park. It’s on the way south to Highway 1, which will bring you to Monterey and its famous aquarium. If you travel in spring or autumn we advise you to take a whale watching trip and get the full experience of the bay. What awaits is the 17 Mile Drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea, a scenic road that takes you on a tour past rugged beaches, extravagant houses and wind-blown cypress trees that rest beside an ocean filled with seals that enjoy the sunlight on offshore rocks.

Day 5

The most unique town on the West Coast

You will love this charming town for its unique appeal. Stroll down to bask in the sunlight of Carmel's beaches, or venture up the hill to visit galleries, restaurants and beautiful homes. Point Lobos State Marine Reserve lies just a couple of miles south of Carmel, it’s a glorious place to spend a morning or afternoon hiking amongst the coves and along the rugged seascape. This beautiful coastal spot is a firm favourite of the team at The American Road Trip Company, it’s a must for anyone driving Highway 1.

Day 6

Big Sur - The drive of your life

The classic All-American drive down California’s Highway 1 is at its most dramatic when it passes through the 90 miles of coastal road that is known as Big Sur. Twisting roads curve around the steep cliffs, occasionally passing gorgeous State Parks and spectacular vista points that look towards the Pacific Ocean. Further down the coast, Hearst Castle perches on The Enchanted Hill. This is an extraordinary home that hosted the world’s most famous and wealthy. Visitors today will see fine antiques and art from all around the world in a luxurious setting.

Day 8

Meet the Santa Monica pier

Once you’ve enjoyed your breakfast in Santa Barbara, Highway 1 awaits for you to continue your drive south past Malibu’s famous beaches. Once you’ve reached Santa Monica, prepare to relax by its famous pier along the Baywatch-esque beaches and theme parks. Hire a bike or some rollerblades and cruise down the boardwalk to Venice Beach and shop to your heart’s content at the 3rd Street Promenade. California at its most beautiful!

Spend your day in Tinseltown

This glamorous neighbourhood is the pinnacle of the film industry, its appeal almost as famous as its productions. Experience the home of the Oscars and walk down Hollywood Boulevard, a stroll as scintillating as it is spectacular. The Griffith Observatory lies just a short drive towards the north east, perched on a peak overlooking the urban region of LA, and is a recently renovated landmark worth visiting.

Beverly Hills awaits on your third day in LA

Beverly Hills offers the chance to see movie star homes with sky-high fences on palm tree-lined streets. Once you've found the homes of your favourite celebrities, you could see where they shop by joining them on Rodeo Drive. Day 11

Swim in the pools of Palm Springs

Spend your morning by the pool and enjoy your breakfast before heading east to Sinatra’s favourite getaway. On your way to Las Vegas you’ll find Palm Springs, which feels like a mirage in the desert as the luxurious shelter is surrounded by dry mountains on all sides. Forget your worries whilst you lay by the pool, shoot some rounds of golf, or cruise the radiant streets and take in the modernist architecture. Made famous by the Hollywood stars of yesteryear, Palm Springs makes a wonderful pitstop on any road trip.

Witness the scenery of Joshua Tree NP

Joshua Tree National Park is an alien landscape, characterized by rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes. Named for the region’s twisted, bristled Joshua trees, the park straddles the cactus-dotted Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert. A spectacular scenery which surrounds you for hours until you reach your final destination amongst the lights and glamour of the night.

Vegas baby!

Wake up in the luxury of Las Vegas. With so many first-class hotels, cuisine and entertainment to chose from you'll have plenty to keep you busy. Alternatively, spend the day relaxing by the pool or maybe have a flutter in the casinos. Get dressed up and hit the tables, bars and restaurants - it’s time to paint the town red.

Day 14

Your last day in Las Vegas

If your head hurts after a big night out, you can always relax by the amazing pools adorning nearly every hotel. Stretch your legs with a walk along the legendary 'strip', book tickets to one of the incredible shows or take some retail therapy. We recommend visiting one of the over the top buffets in the hotels. Just make sure you are hungry when you go, the range and quality of the food is amazing value! This is your last day before flying back home, so make the most of it.
